What Is An Essay?

"What is an essay? An essay is a composition on a specific theme, subject, or topic. It is a non-fiction exercise for the expression of your ideas and opinions. There are other formats for writing an essay; but, in this course I am presenting a basic format that can be used successfully at all levels of education." After warning the sea otter that some birds are out to steal his lunch, Marie provides the basic framework and outlines the points for composing an essay, then goes on to elaborate on each of those points, including the pre-writing preliminaries of organizing your thoughts and deciding on a theme.   She talks about using footnotes and bibliographies when writing Research Essays, and provides definitions and explanations.  "Oh, Oh, bibliography, footnotes, research sources!  It's starting to sound complicated.  But don't worry because I'm going to walk you through the steps as we construct a sample Research Essay.  Remember: No one fails if they have the tools."
