Lesson 9: Objective Complement

"The Objective Complement (or completion) may be a noun or a predicate adjective. It follows the direct object of a transitive verb and completes the verb by describing the direct object. The objective complement answers the question What?"

Marie is now pruning the bushes that separate her yard from the beach. She takes a wheelbarrow load of cuttings and fallen maple leaves down onto the beach, so they can be disposed of in a bonfire. As she does this, she uses sample sentences to demonstrate the objective complement as a predicate adjective, and as a noun. "Objective complements follow the direct objects of transitive verbs."
